The University of Pittsburgh’s School of Nursing launched a nationally accredited Nurse-Midwife major within its Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program — but as of 2025, the program is no longer accepting new applications. While current students are still completing their training, prospective midwifery students will need to look elsewhere for entry.
Program Background and Accreditation
Pitt’s midwifery major achieved full accreditation by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME) in February 2022. This BSN-to-DNP program was designed to prepare students for certification and licensure as Certified Nurse-Midwives (CNMs), providing care across birth settings, from hospitals to homes and birth centers.
The program is accredited through 2027, but no longer enrolling new students. Curriculum remains in place for those already admitted.
What the Program Offers
Students in the program complete courses and clinicals in areas such as:
- Family-centered care and well-woman gynecology
- Management of complex obstetric health issues
- Well newborn care and high-risk birth support
- DNP-level leadership, quality improvement, and evidence-based practice
Clinical placements include Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC, The Midwife Center for Birth & Women’s Health, and the Allegheny County Health Department. Students also complete a culminating DNP project and submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal.
Why Applications Are Closed
The University has not issued a formal statement explaining why the Nurse-Midwife major is paused. As of now, no new admission cycles are open. Prospective students seeking CNM training are encouraged to explore other fully accredited programs.
